Located in the northern part of Kameoka City in Kyoto Prefecture, Ushimatsu-yama is a beautiful, cone-shaped mountain standing 636 meters tall. Admired for its elegant silhouette, it has earned the nickname “Tamba Fuji”, and has long been beloved by locals. With its blend of nature, history, and sacred sites, Ushimatsu-yama is perfect for a light hiking adventure.

Visible from all around the Kameoka Basin, Ushimatsu-yama’s striking profile dominates the landscape. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views of Kameoka City and the Hozugawa River area — and on clear days, you can even see as far as Osaka.
🛕 A Sacred Mountain with Historic Shrines
The mountain trail is dotted with historic shrines. Near the summit stands Kotohira Shrine, and at the base lies Moto-Atago Shrine, both of which have been worshipped by ascetics and riverboatmen for centuries. Hiking Ushimatsu-yama is a spiritual as well as scenic experience.

🥾 Recommended Route (Approx. 2–3 hours total)
- Start from the base in Hozu Town
- Ascend to Ushimatsu-yama summit
- Visit Kotohira Shrine near the summit
- Descend via the same trail
- Stop by Moto-Atago Shrine after the descent
While the trail includes some steep slopes, it is well-maintained and suitable for beginner to intermediate hikers. The route offers a good balance of challenge and reward, with plenty of scenic and cultural stops along the way.

⛩ Kotohira Shrine (Near Summit)
This shrine has long been revered by the boatmen of Hozugawa. Its serene atmosphere is perfect for a quiet rest and prayer near the top.
⛩ Moto-Atago Shrine (At the Base)
Said to have been built during the Kamakura period, this shrine is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Its ancient architecture and towering trees create a deeply sacred ambiance.
